Local Government Excellence Awards

The Local Government Excellence Awards recognizes and celebrates outstanding achievements and contributions of local government councils in states and Nigeria.

The awards promote excellence, innovation, and best practices in local governance and foster healthy competition among local government councils.

Objectives:

1. To recognise and reward local government councils for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the development of the State.
2. To promote excellence, innovation, and best practices in local governance.
3. To foster healthy competition among local government councils.
4. To encourage citizen participation and engagement in local governance.

Professional Awards Categories

Award for Career Excellence

Recognizes an outstanding chief local government administrator who has fostered representative democracy by enhancing the effectiveness of local elected officials and by consistently initiating creative and successful programs.

Eligibility: 

A minimum of 10 years of senior-level service and endorsement by past or present elected officials. 

Award for Career Development 

Recognizes an outstanding local government administrator who has made a significant contribution to the career development of new talent in professional local government management. 

Assistance Excellence in Leadership Award 

Recognizes a local government management professional who has made significant contributions toward excellence in leadership while serving as an assistant (regardless of title) to a chief local government administrator or department head. 

Eligibility 

The winner must be a full-time assistant reporting to a chief local government administrator or department head with significant executive level responsibilities in the areas of staff management. The winner must be a supervising staff development and performance with direct influential relationship with department heads on programme implementation and administration); financial management (preparation and administration of operating budgets, determining programme cost effectiveness, and comparing alternative strategies); policy facilitation and implementation (developing and analyzing policy alternatives and implementing policies).

Academic Excellence Award 

Recognizes a classroom instructor who has made a significant contribution to the formal education of students pursuing careers in local government.

Eligibility:

Unrestricted.

Early Career Leadership Award

Recognizes an outstanding early-career local government professional who has demonstrated leadership, competency and commitment to local government as a profession. 

Eligibility:

Less than 10 years of service to local government, and endorsement by a past or present local government manager or elected official.

Elected Officials Awards Categories

1. Best Local Government Chairman of the Year: Honouring the overall best approach to local government governance. 
2. Innovative Governance Awards*: Honouring innovative approaches to governance, public service delivery, and community development.
3. Community Development Awards*: Celebrating contributions to community development, poverty reduction, and social welfare.
4. Public Service Awards: Recognizing exceptional public service, dedication, and commitment to the well-being of local communities.
5. Environmental Sustainability Awards: Acknowledging efforts to promote environmental sustainability, conservation, and climate action.
6. Youth Empowerment Awards: Honouring initiatives that empower youth, promote education, and foster skills development.
7. Infrastructure Development Awards: Recognizing contributions to infrastructure development, transportation, and urban planning.
8. Health and Wellness Awards: Celebrating initiatives that promote health, wellness, and access to healthcare services.
9. Education and Skills Development Awards: Honouring efforts to improve education, skills development, and human capital development.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. All local government councils are eligible to participate.
2. Local government councils must have been in existence for at least one year.
3. Local government councils must have a proven record of accomplishments and contributions to the development of a State.

Award Ceremony:

The award ceremony will be held on a date yet to be announced.

Dignitaries, local government officials, and citizens will attend the ceremony.
